JUST YOU VERSUS YOU.
THE RESET.
In 2019, accompanied by my ever supportive wife, I left Sydney for Melbourne. The film industry called—a massive opportunity to work on the visual effects for another addition to the John Wick franchise that I simply couldn't turn down.
Then Covid completely shut down the world. Melbourne was hit with some of the strictest lockdown laws on the planet. For over three years, my world shrank, my routine dissolved, and my weight exploded. I lost total control of my physical baseline.
When it was finally time to move back home to Sydney, I knew I couldn't go back to the same suburbs I had always lived in. Returning to the old geography felt like accepting a regression. I felt like a different person, only carrying a completely different physical and mental weight.
We landed in Drummoyne instead. It was an intentional disruption to respect the person I needed to become.
March, 2023.
Ground zero. It’s hard to look at this now, but this is exactly where the reset had to happen. Before the 40kg drop, before the half marathons, there was just the heavy aftermath of the lockdowns and a decision to finally take the control back.
If you are standing at your own starting line right now, forget the finish line. Just put your shoes on, get out the door, and focus on the very first lap.
The Proving Ground
I kept looking at the Bay Run.
Seven-ish kilometres of pavement right in my own backyard. To a seasoned runner, it’s a quick morning loop. To me, at my starting weight, it felt insurmountable. So, I set one single, non-negotiable goal: to one day be able to complete just one uninterrupted lap of the water. No walking. No stopping.
The Snowball Effect
That single lap was the catalyst for everything. It proved that the baseline could be moved. It started a positive avalanche. I lost enough weight to truly start running, and the momentum simply took over.
Fast forward to today: I am 40kg lighter. I just crossed the finish line of a half marathon. I am healthier, sharper, and happier than I have ever been. But looking back at the entire transformation, none of the long-distance milestones matter as much as that very first lap. That was where the actual battle was won.
